Consulting Psychology

Mind - Body - Systems - Meta

Finding balance in one's personal and professional life is an important step towards authentic happiness and joy. Balance is achieved first through building awareness of one's Mind (logic and emotions), Body (behaviors and senses), Systems (social and relational), and Meta (spiritual or sacred values), followed by an intention to bring balance back to the self where balance is needed. From a place of greater balance, one gains greater ability to connect with their innate creativity and resourcefulness, greater agility to move more effortlessly around one's logical and emotional brain, body senses, internal and external relational systems, and spiritual and sacred values, offering greater awareness of the choices avaialble through exploration of "growing edges".

The purpose of consulting psychology and professional coaching is sustained cognitive, emotional, behavioral changes that facilitate goal attainment and performance enhancement in one's personal or professional life. As a consulting psychologist, I explore these four dynamic states - Mind, Body, Systems and Meta - using an evidence-based assessment approach and a dynamic integration of evidence-based interventions, including Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Internal Family Systems, and Mentalization-Based Therapy. Consulting psychology is above all about human growth and change. The goal is to facilitate the client's own natural potential for growth and holding the client as the expert on the content of thier own lived experiences.

How I Work with Individuals and Organizations

I am available to work with individual clients and organizations. In most cases, the relationship will begin with a discovery session to better understand the needs and expectations of the client or the organization. Individual clients will then complete a basic assessment or a more comprehensive Executive Development Needs Assessment (DNA). My preference is to meet clients in my private office located on the east side of Providence, RI. However, I can also facilitate web-based sessions or, when possible, meet at the client/organization location.

Executive Development Needs Assessment (DNA)

The Executive Development Needs Assessment (DNA) is a comprehensive and holistic assessment designed to assess and baseline personality type, cognitive flexibility and creativity, relational style, and conflict management style. Where applicable, this assessment may include a 360-degree feedback survey. The assessment is combined with a detailed interview of professional background and history, personal history, values, purpose and goals. The assessment data and interview content is analyzed and integrated into a comprehensive document to summarize the findings and recommend an executive development plan.

  • Identify strengths and balance within the mind, body, systems, and meta framework

  • Acquire a comprehensive plan for use with mentors, managers, and teams

  • Create a foundational purpose and values statement and aligned development plan

Professional Coaching & Development

Professional coaching is offered as a follow-up to the Executive Development Needs Assessment (DNA) or as a one-on-one ongoing relationship for those already familiar with the coaching process. The intent of the coaching process is to move the client around the four dynamic states (Mind - Body - Systems - Meta) as a means to unlock a person's innate potential for growth. Through creating connections between the four dynamic states, the client can become more resourceful, agile, and aware of the choices available to him or her. The coach is the expert at the process of coaching but the client is the expert on his or her own lived experiences, ultimately the source and director of change.

  • Evidence-based assessments and interventions to support the growth process

  • Increased self-awareness in the four dynamic states (Mind - Body - Systems - Meta)

  • Exploration of cognitive, emotional, sensing, and connecting agility

  • Accountability for continuous learning and goal commitment

Team Development & Systems Coaching

"If you want to go fast, go alone - if you want to go far, go together"

~African Proverb

Organizations rely on teams and teamwork to accomplish corporate goals and objectives. Teams are a function of the individuals on the team - and the team itself. Like each member of the team, the collective team has a unique voice and perspective. This voice may be in the form of mission, purpose, strategy or objectives - and may be misaligned or in conflict with individual members of the team. This can be an indicator of team conflict, poor communications, role confusion - and degrade trust among team members.

Trust among members of a team is vital for long-term and sustainable peak performance. Building trust among team members is an "always" thing, created in the moment, strengthened over time, and when violated, hard to regain. Trust builds psychological safety. Trust encourages innovation and decision-making, improves team morale, and creates goodwill among team members. Trust is a two-way street - requiring one to be both trusting and trustworthy in order to fully contribute to team success.

The following half-day programs are available for team development, designed to improve communications and promote trusting relationships within teams:

  • Communications and Conflict Management

  • Team 360-degree survey

  • Strategic Planning for Teams

  • Systems Coaching
